J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit from about 1930 to 1936. When a publisher, George Allen & Unwin, expressed interest in the book Tolkien revised the story for publication and The Hobbit went on to become an international award-winning success.
Fans of The Hobbit had to wait 14 years before they could read the sequel, but they have had to wait almost 80 years to see a live-action movie based on the book brought to the silver screen.
